Letter From An Essayist

Letter From An Essayist is the Substack home for a conversation about essayism.

Essayism is a word I use to explore what happens when writing becomes a way of paying attention: to experience, ideas, places, relationships, and questions that do not yield immediately to a settled answer. It is not a programme or a doctrine. It is an invitation to look again.

Essayism.org is where the wider project takes shape: a body of writing on the essay, reflective practice, and the structural tensions of life. This publication is its companion space: a place to discuss that work, follow its paths, and explore its questions together.

A letter may begin with something on Essayism.org. It may begin elsewhere: a conversation, an encounter, a memory, a difficulty, or a thought that seems worth staying with. The form remains open because the inquiry remains open.

A place for exchange

On Substack, engagement is central. The letters matter, but so does what happens around them.

The Chat is a conversation room: a place to share observations, questions, examples, disagreements, and connections. Contributions from readers are not an afterthought or a response box beneath the work. They can become part of the enquiry itself; altering a question, revealing a relation, or providing the starting point for a future letter.

The aim is not simply to gather readers, but to make room for exchange: a readership that participates in the work of attention.
